According to Ireporter Online, the National Sports Commission (NSC) has charged Team Nigeria to deliver strong and competitive performances at the World Athletics Relays scheduled for May 2 to 3 in Gaborone, Botswana.

Speaking ahead of the team’s departure, NSC Director General Bukola Olopade urged the athletes to remain disciplined, focused, and committed as they represent the country on the global stage. He described the championship as a key opportunity for Nigeria to further strengthen its standing in international athletics.

Olopade expressed full confidence in the squad, stating that the entire nation is behind them and expects a performance that will make the country proud. He emphasized the importance of targeting podium finishes while also securing qualification spots for upcoming major athletics events.

The Nigerian contingent departed the country in the early hours of Monday aboard Ethiopian Airlines, with several foreign-based athletes expected to join the team upon arrival in Botswana.

Nigeria will compete in all six relay events after receiving approval from World Athletics to expand its participation beyond the three events it initially qualified for. Officials say the broader entry provides a valuable opportunity to demonstrate the country’s depth in relay events and build momentum ahead of future competitions.

The World Athletics Relays also serves as a crucial qualification pathway for the World Athletics Championships in Beijing as well as the World Athletics Ultimate Championship.
