Governor Abdullahi Sule of Nasarawa State has shed light on a significant financial decision made during the administration of former President Olusegun Obasanjo, which played a crucial role in alleviating Nigeria’s crippling debt burden. Speaking in an interview with Channels TV, Governor Sule highlighted how Nigeria, under Obasanjo’s leadership, faced a daunting $30 billion debt to the Paris Club and London Club.

According to Sule, Obasanjo was presented with a unique opportunity to clear the nation’s debt by paying $12 billion, a move that would result in the remaining debt being completely wiped out. Sule praised this decision, describing it as one of the most beneficial actions taken by Obasanjo for the country. The governor emphasized that this decisive step not only freed Nigeria from the overwhelming debt but also set a precedent for effective debt management.

Reflecting on current financial trends, Governor Sule contrasted Obasanjo’s deal with the loans now being provided by the World Bank to Nigerian states. He noted that these loans are specifically designed to support the post-Covid recovery, with the World Bank dictating the projects and sectors where the funds should be utilized. Sule pointed out that while the World Bank’s involvement is crucial for the nation’s recovery, the loans come with conditions that must be carefully managed.

Governor Sule concluded by acknowledging that the terms for repayment of these World Bank loans have not yet been defined, as they are currently treated as credit facilities. He suggested that the strategic management of these loans, similar to Obasanjo’s approach, could lead to substantial benefits for Nigeria in the long run.
