The court had ordered that all parties maintain the “Status Quo Ante Bellum” until the scheduled hearing on Thursday, 10th August 2023.

The Federal High Court in Abuja, presided over by Hon. Justice Ahmed Mohammed, had issued a temporary order to halt the impeachment move against the Deputy Governor, Phillip Shaibu, by Governor Obaseki.

However, despite the court’s temporary order, there are insider reports indicating that the governor plans to proceed with the impeachment process on Monday, 7th August, as a direct challenge to the judiciary.

It is believed that the governor’s urgency stems from his fear that the upcoming hearing on 10th August may not favor his intentions, leading to the rush to initiate the impeachment process before the court date.

Previously, Deputy Governor Phillip Shaibu had sought an interlocutory injunction from the Federal High Court in Abuja to prevent the commencement of an impeachment process against him. The lawsuit involved the Inspector General of Police, State Security Service, the Governor of Edo State, the Speaker of Edo State House of Assembly, and the Chief Judge of Edo State as defendants.

Shaibu’s application sought to restrain the 3rd, 4th, and 5th Defendants/Respondents, or their agents, from initiating the impeachment process against him. He also requested the court to prevent the governor or anyone acting on his behalf from harassing and obstructing him in carrying out his duties as the deputy governor.

It is essential to adhere to the court’s pronouncements, including maintaining the “status quo ante bellum,” as any impeachment process without following the court’s directives would be considered legally futile.
