Obaseki’s Desperate Bid: New Loan To Rescue Ighodalo’s Campaign Sparks Outrage
Edo State, Nigeria – July 26, 2024 – Governor Godwin Obaseki is reportedly preparing to secure another loan, sparking significant concern among residents and political analysts. According to a press release from the APC New Media Directorate , the funds are intended to support the struggling campaign of Obaseki’s chosen successor, Asue Ighodalo.
Sources within the Edo State House of Assembly (EDHA) have disclosed that the Governor is on the brink of finalizing a plan to secure new loans, purportedly from China. Obaseki has begun an intense lobbying effort to expedite the approval process in the Assembly. Reports suggest that the agreements could be signed imminently, a scenario that has caused alarm throughout the state.
The urgency of this loan request raises serious questions about Governor Obaseki’s priorities. With critical sectors such as healthcare, education, and infrastructure in dire need of funding, the Governor’s decision to seek additional debt for election purposes is viewed as highly controversial.
A senior member of the EDHA, who requested anonymity, revealed that the Governor is aggressively courting assembly members to hasten the loan’s approval. The primary aim appears to be directing resources into Ighodalo’s campaign, which has been struggling due to a significant fundraising shortfall.
This development comes at a particularly challenging time for Edo State. As essential services and infrastructure continue to deteriorate, the idea of incurring more debt is seen as reckless. The APC’s press release criticizes Governor Obaseki’s decision to prioritize electioneering over the well-being of the state’s residents, highlighting a significant misalignment of priorities.
The APC has called on Governor Obaseki to reconsider his approach and focus on addressing the urgent needs of Edo State. Osigwe Omo-Ikirodah, Director of the APC New Media Directorate, emphasized that taking on additional debt to finance an election campaign is not in the best interest of the people of Edo State. The APC remains committed to good governance, fiscal responsibility, and sustainable development for the benefit of all citizens.
