Obi Cubana: ‘I’ve Never Benefited From Government, Here’s Why I’m In Politics

According to Ireporter Online, Nigerian entrepreneur and socialite Obinna Iyiegbu, popularly known as Obi Cubana, has explained that his foray into politics is driven by a commitment to fostering meaningful engagement and inclusive governance in Nigeria.

In a statement issued on Monday, Cubana emphasized that his involvement in political discourse is not motivated by personal gain. He highlighted that his career as a private citizen was built on hard work, entrepreneurship, and strategic investments, noting that he has never held public office nor benefited from government patronage.

Cubana stated that his participation in politics aims to bridge the gap between government and citizens, particularly among young people and across Nigeria’s diverse regions. He called for deliberate efforts at all levels of government to strengthen transparency, accountability, and empathy, stressing that trust remains the foundation of any functional democracy.

Addressing recent criticisms regarding his comments about the Igbo community, Cubana dismissed claims that undermine any ethnic group, stressing that he does not subscribe to narratives that weaken unity or question the contributions of the Igbo people or other communities in Nigeria.

He elaborated, “My involvement in political discourse is purely driven by a desire to create platforms for meaningful engagement, especially between young people and the older generation, and across Nigeria’s diverse regions. The gap between government and the people is real, and rebuilding trust must be a continuous and intentional effort.”

Speaking on his association with the City Boy Movement, Cubana explained that the initiative is designed to encourage inclusive political participation among youths and the private sector. He cautioned against framing political engagement along ethnic lines, emphasizing that democratic participation should focus on ideas, policies, and collective progress rather than divisive narratives.

“The City Boy Movement represents an opportunity to redefine civic engagement, where young Nigerians and the private sector can actively participate in shaping governance and policy direction,” he said.
