The group pointed out that the states and geopolitical zones were established during military administrations, highlighting that the Igbo community had limited involvement in this process.
Ohanaeze emphasized that the South-East is at a disadvantage due to having only five states, while other geopolitical zones possess a minimum of six states.
President Tinubu nominated a total of 48 candidates for ministerial positions, all of whom have undergone Senate screening. The South-East’s five nominees include Nkiru Onyejiocha (Abia), Uju Ohaneye (Anambra), Dave Umahi (Ebonyi), Uche Nnaji (Enugu), and Doris Uzoka (Imo).
Ohanaeze is now requesting “justice, fairness, and equity” for every ethnic group in Nigeria, including the Igbo.
“The creation of states and geopolitical zones occurred during military administrations. It’s common knowledge that the Igbo community had limited involvement during this process. Consequently, the South-East was disadvantaged by being allocated five (5) states while other zones received a minimum of six (6) states. This situation has placed the South-East in a challenging political, economic, and social position.
“Our political influence has dwindled with few senators, representatives in the House of Representatives, governors, members of the house of assembly, and local governments.
“In terms of federal revenue allocation, the South-East is denied the revenue share based on states. Additionally, federal board appointments and other resource distributions deliberately underrepresent us.
“We want to acknowledge that this situation wasn’t caused by the current administration, yet we appeal to His Excellency, Mr. Bola Ahmed Tinubu, GCFR, to aid in rectifying this situation and restoring justice, equity, and fairness in Nigeria.
“We pray for divine blessings and prosperity for our nation, Nigeria, and for our leaders to possess the wisdom and insight to guide the Nigerian nation towards peace, happiness, and prosperity for all citizens, regardless of ethnicity, faith, or political inclination.”
