Onoh Questions Gowon’s Account of Relationship With Ojukwu, Advocates For Accuracy
Dr. Josef Onoh, the brother-in-law of the late Biafran leader Dim Chukwuemeka Odumegwu-Ojukwu, has countered former Head of State General Yakubu Gowon’s claims about reconciling with Ojukwu. Onoh clarified that what Gowon described...READ MORE…
as a reconciliation meeting was actually a condolence visit following the death of Ojukwu’s father-in-law, Chief C.C. Onoh, in 2009.
In a statement, Onoh criticized Gowon’s narrative as misleading, asserting that no formal reconciliation took place between the two leaders. According to Onoh, Gowon’s visit was a show of respect for the deceased, not a resolution of differences stemming from the Nigerian Civil War.
Onoh, who was present at the encounter, recalled Ojukwu expressing no personal grudge against Gowon and emphasizing his rejection of another Biafra achieved through violence. Despite the amicable tone of their conversation, Onoh stated that it was not a reconciliation but a courtesy exchange.
He accused Gowon of rewriting history to elevate his image, suggesting that the former leader’s accounts were driven by lingering insecurities about Ojukwu.
Onoh also recounted a separate London meeting in 2010, where Gowon reportedly displayed discomfort with Ojukwu’s biographer, Frederick Forsyth, being present. Onoh alleged that Gowon was apprehensive about Forsyth documenting the meeting, fearing it would portray him as apologizing to Ojukwu.
Ending his statement, Onoh urged Gowon to refrain from altering historical facts, emphasizing the importance of truth over fabricated narratives. “The dead cannot speak, but I was there,” Onoh said. “Telling the truth is always easier than weaving a web of lies.”
