Outrage in the Ummah: Gumi Condemns Saudi Deportation, Says Nigerians Won’t Be Humiliated
Prominent Islamic cleric, Sheikh Ahmad Gumi, has confirmed that the Federal Government is actively addressing the circumstances surrounding his recent deportation by Saudi Arabian authorities.
According to reports, Gumi explained in a Facebook post that despite being issued a valid visa, he was barred from continuing to Medina to begin his religious observances.
Speaking with Vanguard, the cleric stated that Nigerian authorities responded swiftly, highlighting that the incident carries broader diplomatic implications for Nigeria’s relationship with foreign nations.
Gumi underscored Nigeria’s need to uphold its sovereignty and the rights of its citizens, asserting:
“Yes, the Nigerian government is on top of it. Nigeria must stand firm as a free nation. Every Nigerian is entitled to freedom of speech — provided it does not incite violence, discrimination, or ethnic hatred. Personal views should not be grounds for denying someone access to religious worship.”
He further noted that both the Minister of Foreign Affairs and the Director General of the DSS had contacted him, stating,
“The government is taking appropriate steps to ensure no Nigerian is harassed unjustly.”
Reaffirming Nigeria’s dignity, he added:
“We are not slaves to anyone. This is a message that must be sent to authoritarian regimes — Nigerians deserve respect, and our rights must not be trampled upon.”
Expressing hope, Gumi concluded,
“Yes, I will return for the pilgrimage. Worship should not be restricted — the holy land must remain open to all faithful.”
