event in Kaduna for the late Premier of Northern Nigeria, Sardauna Ahmadu Bello, Al-Mustapha warned that the road to recovery would inevitably involve some tough decisions that could upset various stakeholders.

He stated, “It is better to hurt people and get it [the North] back on course for us to achieve what we desire, so that the country at the end would be the beneficiary of the unity in the North.”

The North’s Struggles: Weak Institutions and Rising Crime

The former military officer painted a grim picture of the region, lamenting the decay of institutions and the growing social and economic challenges. “Institutions in the 19 Northern states are either weak or non-existent,” Al-Mustapha said, emphasizing how this vacuum has fueled crime and social unrest.

“We cannot sit and watch institutions decay, crime rates soar, and leaders remain indifferent while the younger generation is left in disarray. That’s why we must endure some pain during the healing process,” he explained.

A Vision for Unity and Progress

Al-Mustapha’s plan centers on unifying the North, strengthening its institutions, and laying the groundwork for socio-economic development. He called on both leaders and the younger generation to join hands in this mission, announcing plans to engage with vibrant organizations and leaders in an upcoming meeting scheduled for February in Bauchi.

He added, “The North’s progress is essential for Nigeria’s overall development. When the North thrives, the economy, security, and politics of the entire nation will benefit.”

Criticism of Northern Governors

In a scathing critique, Al-Mustapha accused Northern governors of failing to address the region’s challenges. He highlighted the lack of a unified approach to education, security, and poverty alleviation, calling it “shameful.”

“There is no central fund or cohesive strategy for education, power, industrial growth, or poverty alleviation. Poverty has become a permanent feature in the North, and this is a disgrace to all of us as Northerners,” he stated.

A Call to Action

As the nation reflects on the legacy of Sardauna Ahmadu Bello, Al-Mustapha urged leaders to prevent further deterioration of the region. He warned that some individuals might resist these changes because they benefit from the current chaos but maintained that the focus must remain on unifying and rebuilding the North.

“The wounds may be painful to heal, but healing is the only way forward,” Al-Mustapha concluded, signaling a readiness to take bold, sometimes controversial steps to ensure a brighter future for the region.
