Pakistani Politician Resigns Over Rigged Election Win

Pakistan conducted its national and provincial elections on February 8, amidst heightened anticipation and scrutiny.
Rehman, representing the Jamaat-e-Islami party, took a principled stand by rejecting what he termed an unfair advantage over independent candidate Saif Bari, allegedly backed by Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI), the party led by former Prime Minister Imran Khan.
Initially hailed as the victor in PS-129 with over 26,000 votes, Rehman disclosed startling irregularities upon closer examination. He uncovered discrepancies in Bari’s votes, which plummeted from 31,000 to a mere 11,000 when scrutinizing records from individual polling stations.
Refusing to condone an illegitimate triumph, Rehman resolved to step down from his purported victory.
In a resolute statement on Monday, February 19, Rehman declared, “If anyone wants to make us win in an illegitimate manner, we will not be accepting that. Public opinion should be respected. Let the winner win; let the loser lose; no one should get anything extra.”
The elections were marred by allegations of interference and widespread fraud, casting doubt on the integrity of the electoral process. However, Pakistani electoral authorities have rebuffed these claims, further intensifying the controversy surrounding the results.
As Rehman vacates his PS-129 seat, the question remains unanswered as to who will succeed him in representing the constituency, underscoring the lingering uncertainty and turmoil surrounding Pakistan’s electoral landscape.
