Omemu had previously declared the South-South ZEC meeting held in Benin, Edo State, as illegal, arguing that it was convened without proper authorization from the Zonal Working Committee.

During the ZEC meeting in Benin, Martin Amaewhule, the factional Speaker of the Rivers State House of Assembly, moved the motion for Omemu’s suspension, which was seconded by Hon. Godwin Offiono, a member of the House of Representatives representing Ogoja/Yala constituency.

Following the suspension, PDP Zonal Legal Adviser, George Turnah, was appointed as Acting Zonal Secretary, while a disciplinary committee was set up to investigate Omemu’s actions.

South-South PDP Vice Chairman, Dan Orbih, praised the ZEC for taking swift action, stating that the suspension was necessary to uphold party unity and discipline.
