Earlier today, the APC governorship candidate, Senator Monday Okpebholo, popularly known as Akpakomiza, was at the royal palace of the Oba of Benin, His Royal Majesty, Omo N’Oba N’Edo, Uku Akpolokpolo Oba Ewuare II, to felicitate with him on the occasion of the return of Benin looted artifacts by a US museum. The event marked a significant moment for the people of Edo State, as the prestigious Benin Bronzes were repatriated from the Iowa Museum in the United States, restoring a crucial part of their cultural heritage.
Senator Okpebholo’s presence at the ceremony underscored his deep respect for the Benin culture, despite being from the central region of the state, which has distinct cultural practices from those of the Benins. His attendance not only highlighted his commitment to the unity and cultural preservation of Edo State but also resonated with the electorate, enhancing his image as a candidate who honors and values the diverse traditions of all Edo people.
Accompanied by top members of the Edo APC, Okpebholo demonstrated humility and reverence before the Oba, further endearing himself to the traditional institutions and the people they represent. His gesture of paying homage to the Oba of Benin in such a momentous occasion was seen as a testament to his inclusive approach to governance and his dedication to fostering a sense of shared identity and pride among the people of Edo State.
The return of the Benin artifacts has been celebrated as a triumph for cultural restitution, and Senator Okpebholo’s participation in the ceremony added a layer of political significance to the event. As the most endorsed candidate, his visible support for the cultural heritage of the Benin Kingdom and his respectful engagement with traditional leaders bolstered his reputation as a leader who is committed to the holistic development of Edo State, bridging regional divides, and honoring the rich legacy of its people.
