Her arrest was confirmed in a statement released on Monday by Dungus Abdulkarim, spokesperson for the Yobe State Police Command.

According to the statement, Modu was taken into custody on Sunday, October 20, 2024, around 6:30 PM after the police received reliable intelligence at the ‘A’ Divisional Police Headquarters in Damaturu regarding the alleged gunrunner.

“The Command has successfully apprehended Hamsatu Modu, 54, of Morami Village, Jakana, Konduga LGA, Borno State, for trafficking ammunition from Buni Yadi to Damaturu. On October 20, 2024, at approximately 1830 hours, the ‘A’ Divisional Police Headquarters in Damaturu received credible information about a suspected gunrunner heading to Damaturu. Swift action led to the interception of a Golf 3 saloon car, where a thorough search uncovered 350 rounds of live 7.62×39 mm ammunition concealed in the suspect’s luggage,” the police statement detailed.

The police command indicated that the suspect is currently undergoing interrogation as investigators work to uncover the criminal network and motives behind the trafficking activities.

Additionally, Garba Ahmed, the Commissioner of Police for Katsina State, has reaffirmed the Command’s commitment to combating crime and urged community members to collaborate with security agencies. He encouraged the public to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activities, individuals, or items to the nearest police station or security establishment.
