President Tinubu Congratulates Justice Stella Anukam on Re-Election to African Court on Human Rights

Abuja, Nigeria – President Bola Tinubu has extended his heartfelt congratulations to Justice Stella Anukam following her re-election as a Judge of the African Court on Human and Peoples’ Rights for another six-year term. Justice Anukam secured her re-election at the African Union Mid-Year Coordination Meeting Executive Council held in Accra, Ghana.

Justice Anukam, an accomplished legal professional, obtained her law degree from Obafemi Awolowo University in Ile-Ife, Osun State, Nigeria, in 1984 and was called to the Nigerian Bar in August 1985. She is also a chartered secretary, chartered arbitrator, and seasoned administrator with a distinguished career, including her roles as former Director of Special Programmes at the Nigerian Institute of Advanced Legal Studies and former Director of the International and Comparative Law Department at the Federal Ministry of Justice.

President Tinubu praised Justice Anukam for her significant contributions to the development of human rights jurisprudence across Africa. He urged her to continue leveraging her extensive knowledge and insights in her role at the African Court. The President reiterated his administration’s commitment to supporting qualified Nigerians in attaining international positions, emphasizing Nigeria’s strategic role in the global community.

The African Court on Human and Peoples’ Rights, established by African states, aims to protect human and peoples’ rights across the continent. It complements the African Commission on Human and Peoples’ Rights and comprises eleven judges nominated and elected by the AU Assembly of Heads of State and Government. Nigeria ratified the Protocol establishing the Court in 2004.
