President Tinubu Seeks Confirmation Of Olufemi Oluyede As Chief Of Army Staff

Tinubu emphasized that the confirmation aligns with Section 218(2) of the 1999 Constitution (as amended) and Section 18(1) of the Armed Forces Act. He praised Oluyede’s qualifications, describing him as a professional whose service to the military and the country makes him “well-suited for the role.” The president urged lawmakers to expedite the confirmation process.

Oluyede was appointed as acting COAS on October 30, following the prolonged illness of former Army Chief, Taoreed Lagbaja. Tragically, Lagbaja passed away on November 5 due to an undisclosed illness. After his death, Tinubu promoted Oluyede to the rank of lieutenant-general, officially decorating him in a ceremony attended by senior military officers.

Prior to his appointment, Oluyede served as the 56th Commander of the Infantry Corps in Kaduna. He was commissioned as a second lieutenant in 1992 and was promoted to major general in September 2020. Oluyede and the late Lagbaja were both members of the 39th Regular Course of the Nigerian Defence Academy, highlighting their long military careers.

In addition to seeking approval from the House of Representatives, Tinubu has also requested the Senate to confirm Oluyede as the substantive COAS.
