President’s Speech Ignores Protesters’ Concerns, Says Kenneth Okonkwo

Legal practitioner and Labour Party member, Kenneth Okonkwo, has voiced his disappointment and confusion regarding President Bola Tinubu’s recent speech addressing the nationwide protests. In an interview with Channels Television, Okonkwo questioned the relevance of the President’s message to the ongoing demonstrations.

Okonkwo criticized the President for failing to address the concerns and grievances of the protesters. Instead, the President’s speech focused on an unrelated issue: the allocation of N570 billion to State Governors. This shift in focus left many, including Okonkwo, frustrated and puzzled.

“I’m sorry to say this because I don’t have better ways to express it. I don’t even know whether he understands or understood what he said because he said this is a broadcast by the President and Commander in Chief of the Armed Forces on Nationwide Protest. Then what it is about the Nationwide Protest that he has addressed? He was telling us he gave N570 billion to Governors,” Okonkwo stated.

The legal practitioner emphasized the need for the President to directly address the protesters’ demands and grievances, rather than diverting attention to unrelated financial allocations. The ongoing protests have highlighted significant public dissatisfaction, and Okonkwo believes that the President’s speech missed a crucial opportunity to engage meaningfully with the demonstrators.
