that the move threatens Nigeria’s democracy and could permanently stain the president’s legacy.
In a strongly worded statement issued on Monday, ILAWDUN Director Prof. Cyprian Edward-Ekpo described the suspension and declaration of a state of emergency in Rivers as unconstitutional and unjustifiable, citing the absence of a genuine breakdown of law and order.
“If the Supreme Court upholds this illegal suspension, it will be seen as a betrayal of democratic values under your watch,” the statement warned.
The group further cautioned against judicial compromise, stating that dismissing the case on technical grounds would damage public trust in both the judiciary and Tinubu’s administration.
ILAWDUN emphasized that a president suspending a democratically elected governor and legislature sets a dangerous precedent, urging Tinubu to act swiftly and restore constitutional order to preserve Nigeria’s democratic integrity.
The Supreme Court is currently reviewing a suit filed by seven opposition governors challenging the legality of the suspension.
