Remove Sanctions On Niger Republic – Northern Elders Forum Tells Tinubu

The Northern Elders Forum (NEF) has called upon President Bola Tinubu to remove the economic sanctions that were imposed on Niger Republic, a neighboring country.

Following the overthrow of democratically elected President Mohamed Bazoum on July 26, a series of sanctions were imposed on Niger by the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS), which is chaired by President Tinubu.

During an extraordinary ECOWAS meeting held on Thursday, a decision was made to deploy standby military troops to restore constitutional order in Niger Republic.

Ango Abdullahi, the convener of NEF, expressed concerns about the use of force to restore constitutional order, suggesting that such an approach might not yield positive outcomes.

He highlighted that lifting the sanctions could create a conducive environment for negotiations and urged for diplomatic efforts to take precedence.

Abdullahi emphasized, “Nigeria should remove all sanctions and other measures intended to force the government and people of Niger into acquiescence.

In addition, Abdullahi appealed to President Tinubu and the citizens of both Nigeria and Niger Republic to uphold their longstanding relationship. He also called upon the people and leaders of both countries to resist any attempts to damage the centuries-old relationship between them.
