Sanusi Vs Bayero: NNPP Lawmaker Attacked And Beaten At Emir’s Event
In a dramatic turn of events, Abdul-Majid Umar, an NNPP lawmaker in the Kano State House of Assembly, was attacked by a mob at an event attended by the deposed Emir of Kano, Aminu Ado Bayero. The incident occurred on Saturday, July 20, during the annual closing prayer for peace and stability organized by Tijjaniyya Muslim leaders.
Umar alleged that he was assaulted by a crowd shortly after noticing he was the only government official present at the event. The situation became perilous, but he was ultimately rescued by the deposed Emir and the police.
The lawmaker, a member of the ruling New Nigerian Peoples Party (NNPP), has been accused of supporting a bill to dethrone Emir Bayero and reinstate Muhammadu Sanusi II. This bill, which repealed the State Emirate Council Law of 2019, led to the creation of four new emirates and the subsequent dethronement of Bayero.
According to Premium Times, Umar was attacked soon after he left the event, sustaining injuries before managing to escape into a police patrol vehicle. He claimed that thousands of supporters of the deposed Emir accused him of repealing the emirate council law, which they believed was responsible for Bayero’s dethronement.
In his defense, the deposed Emir, Aminu Ado-Bayero, intervened to prevent further harm to Umar. Bayero was reported to have physically stopped one of his guards from attacking the lawmaker. Additionally, two of Umar’s supporters were injured during the scuffle.
Khalid Adamu, a spokesperson for the deposed Emir, denied that the attackers were part of Bayero’s entourage and emphasized that they were unarmed at the event.
The Kano emirate crisis has been ongoing since lawmakers repealed the State Emirate Council Law of 2019. This legislative move created four new emirates and led to the dethronement of Ado-Bayero. The situation remains tense as political and royal factions continue to clash.
In related news, Primate Elijah Ayodele recently prophesied about the Kano royal tussle, asserting that Muhammadu Sanusi II is ordained to rule the emirate. Ayodele urged the warring parties to accept Sanusi for the state’s growth, prosperity, and success, warning that a revolution could undermine the traditional system.
