Sanwo-Olu Endorses Hamzat For Lagos Governorship Race

Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, has formally endorsed his deputy, Obafemi Hamzat, as his preferred successor for the 2027 governorship election. According to Ireporter Online, the endorsement followed a closed-door meeting held at Lagos House in Marina, where Hamzat officially declared his intention to contest before members of the State Executive Council and key party stakeholders.

Speaking to journalists after the meeting, Sanwo-Olu disclosed that the decision to back Hamzat was unanimously agreed upon by those present. He described his deputy as a seasoned and capable leader, expressing strong confidence in his preparedness to take on the responsibilities of governing the state. The governor noted that Hamzat’s familiarity with the workings of government and his experience in office positioned him as a suitable candidate.

Sanwo-Olu further commended Hamzat’s performance over the past seven years, highlighting his integrity, loyalty, and commitment to service. He emphasized that their working relationship had demonstrated the deputy governor’s competence and readiness for higher responsibility. The governor also acknowledged the role of Bola Tinubu in shaping their political trajectory, stating that the current development reflects a long-standing vision.

Reaffirming his stance, Sanwo-Olu maintained that Hamzat possesses the qualities required to lead Lagos State effectively, adding that the endorsement followed extensive consultations with party leaders and government officials. He described the decision as the outcome of a collective agreement among stakeholders.

In the lead-up to the announcement, Hamzat had reportedly secured the backing of influential political figures, including Mudashiru Obasa, Femi Gbajabiamila, Tokunbo Abiru, and Wale Edun.

Meanwhile, Obasa is said to have shifted focus from his earlier governorship ambition and is now considering a bid for the House of Representatives seat representing Agege Federal Constituency ahead of the 2027 general elections. His change in direction comes after intensified political consultations and the revival of the Mandate Group, a political structure linked to President Tinubu.

Sources indicate that the latest political alignment followed consultations between President Tinubu and the Governance Advisory Council, which reportedly settled on Hamzat as the preferred candidate for the Lagos governorship race.
