Senate Deputy Minority Leader Oyewumi Joins Accord Party, Dumps PDP

According to Ireporter Online, Senator Lere Oyewumi, representing Osun West, has officially defected from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the Accord Party. Oyewumi, who was elected under the PDP platform in the 2023 general elections, made the announcement in a statement released on Monday in Osogbo.

Before his defection, Oyewumi was the last PDP senator in Osun State, following earlier departures of Senators Olubiyi Fadeyi and Francis Fadahunsi, who had joined the All Progressives Congress (APC). The PDP had also lost three members of the House of Representatives from the state to the APC during a wave of defections in 2025.

This political shift comes months after Osun State Governor Ademola Adeleke defected from the PDP to the Accord Party in December 2025. While Oyewumi initially remained in the PDP after the governor’s move, speculation about his future in the party intensified following the defection of six House of Representatives members to the Accord Party. Similarly, all 25 members of the Osun State House of Assembly elected under the PDP had earlier moved to the Accord Party to align politically with the governor.

According to a statement from his media aide, Timileyin Popoola, the senator formally registered with the Accord Party at Ward 9 in Ikire, Irewole Local Government Area. “Deputy Minority Leader of the Nigerian Senate, Senator Lere Kamorudeen Oyewumi, has formally joined the Accord Party in his ward, marking a significant political development in Osun West,” the statement said. He was welcomed into the party by Victor Akande, the Osun State Chairman of the Accord Party, along with other party leaders and supporters.

The statement noted that Oyewumi’s decision to leave the PDP stemmed from internal disagreements and a desire to strengthen his commitment to his constituents. It added that the defection reflects his dedication to effective representation and policies aimed at promoting development across Osun State.
