Senator Umeh Leaves ADC, Joins NDC In Major Political Shift

According to Ireporter Online, the Senator representing Anambra Central, Victor Umeh, has officially resigned from the African Democratic Congress (ADC) following internal crises and legal disputes that have rocked the party structure.

The lawmaker disclosed this during an interview on Arise News, where he confirmed that his resignation took effect on May 1, 2026, adding that he has since joined the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC).

Umeh explained that his decision was motivated by the need to safeguard efforts aimed at building a strong opposition ahead of the 2027 general elections. He noted that the coalition initially formed within the ADC generated widespread optimism among Nigerians seeking a unified platform to challenge the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).

However, he said the situation deteriorated after internal disagreements escalated into court cases, which, according to him, weakened the party and stalled its progress. He further stated that the lingering legal battles and internal wrangling created instability that made it difficult for the coalition to function effectively.

The senator added that his defection to the NDC was necessary to operate in a more stable political environment where opposition leaders could coordinate without internal distractions, stressing that the new platform offers a better structure for political organisation ahead of the next elections.

“I have resigned from the ADC since the 1st of May. I am moving to the NDC. The ADC coalition came with a lot of hope, and Nigerians celebrated, but some members made themselves willing tools to destabilise the party and went to court,” he was quoted as saying.
