Shock in Edo as Governor Dissolves NURTW, RTEAN Over Alleged Abuse and Sabotage

The Governor of Edo State, Monday Okpebholo, has issued an indefinite suspension of major transport unions and associated groups operating within the state. The sweeping directive affects the National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW), the Road Transport Employers Association of Nigeria (RTEAN), and ANNEWAT, which oversees tricycle and motorcycle operators.

In an official statement released in Benin City, the Secretary to the State Government, Musa Ikhilor, revealed that the governor’s decision followed a series of credible reports alleging widespread extortion and unlawful levy collection by these unions.

The ban also extends to Atalakpa Recovery Concept Limited, a private revenue collection firm linked to a prominent political figure in the state. The government described the company’s operations as exploitative and in violation of public trust, accusing its personnel of engaging in systemic abuse and economic sabotage.

According to the statement, Governor Okpebholo views the activities of the suspended entities as a direct threat to law, order, and economic stability, and as instruments of social oppression against ordinary citizens. The administration emphasized that no individual or group affiliated with these unions is authorized to collect taxes, dues, levies, or charges from motorists, traders, or members of the public.

“The era of using unions as tools to harass and extort road users under the guise of revenue generation is officially over,” the statement affirmed.

Motorists and the general public have been strongly advised to refrain from making any payments or complying with unauthorized levies. The state government reaffirmed its commitment to restoring sanity and transparency in public revenue processes.
