South-South Chieftains Slam Atiku Over Criticism Of Proposed Projects

Reacting strongly, Asuquo Akpan, chairman of Crystal United Club in Uyo, and Okoi Obono-Obla, former presidential aide, called on Atiku to retract his statement. They accused him of obstructing meaningful projects, drawing parallels to his alleged role in the sale of the Aluminium Smelter Company of Nigeria (Alscon) plant in Ikot Abasi, Akwa Ibom.
Obono-Obla accused Atiku of using politics to undermine two transformative projects that could significantly benefit the Southern region and Nigeria as a whole.
In his statement, Obono-Obla criticized Atiku’s remarks as mere political posturing, suggesting that they reflect sectional and regional interests rather than genuine concern for transparency and accountability.
He alleged that Atiku’s actions mirrored his past role in stunting the economic growth of the South-South region, particularly highlighting Atiku’s involvement in the sale of the Alscon plant to Russian investors in 2004.
The South-South chieftains’ criticism underscores the contentious nature of infrastructure projects in Nigeria and the complexities of political interests at play.
