“The Salary Of Mr President Is Not Up To N1,300,000 A Month”- RMAFC Reveals Buhari’s Salary

According to the Revenue Mobilisation Allocation and Fiscal Commission (RMAFC), some public servants are paid more than President Muhammadu Buhari.

“The salary of Mr President is not up to N1,300,000 a month…the allowances of the President are factored into that salary. In 2008, that was considered a big money but now, there are people in the private sector and public sector that earn twice, three times, four times,” RMAFC Chairman, Mohammed Shehu said on Channels Television’s Sunrise Daily on Thursday.

Shehu specifically stated that some government employees, including those at the Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency (NIMASA), the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC), the Nigerian Ports Authority (NPA), and the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), earn more than the President. The NPA is one of the more profitable agencies. In the first half of 2022, it generated over N172 billion.

According to him, Nigeria has approximately 17 different salary categories spread across various agencies. As a result, he proposed the regularization of civil service salary schemes, stating that no public official should earn more than the President.

“What I was saying that time is that no public servant should earn salaries bigger than Mr President’s but we do have public servants that earn bigger than Mr President: NCC, NIMASA, NPA, Central Bank,” he said.

The RMAFC chair also stated that while some government officials receive severance packages of up to N500 million, the President only receives N10 million at the end of his tenure.

Furthermore, he stated that his commission will soon implement an upward review of judicial officer salaries, followed by a review of public officer salaries to reflect current socioeconomic realities.

When asked whether the government can afford to raise salaries at the moment, he lamented the fact that some government agencies spend all of the money they generate, claiming that some agencies have up to N7 trillion in unremitted revenues. As a result, he directed the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) to pursue the responsible parties.

Shehu also urged the Federal Government to expedite the implementation of the Steve Oronsaye report, which was submitted over a decade ago, in order to merge government Ministries, Departments, and Agencies (MDAs) performing similar functions in order to reduce governance costs.
