The Unyielding Spirit Of Akeredolu: A Champion Of Justice And Progress
Arakunrin Oluwarotimi Odunayo Akeredolu, fondly known as Aketi, faced every battle in life with unmatched courage. and integrity. Yet, despite his valiant efforts, he could not overcome the long battle with illness that gradually slowed him down.
It’s a reminder that only God determines the fate of life. Though his beloved wife triumphed over cancer—a rare divine mercy—Akeredolu, unfortunately, succumbed to the illness. His passing was painful, but who can question the Creator’s will?
A year after his death, Akeredolu’s presence is still strongly felt by all who survived him: his family, the legal profession, his political party, and the government. He is remembered as a steadfast activist, a man who wielded the power of the law and the judicial system to fight for both personal and societal causes.
Akeredolu’s contributions to the legal field remain legendary. As the President of the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA), he left an enduring legacy, achieving remarkable feats. His status as a Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN) and Life Bencher was a testament to his legal prowess.
In politics, Akeredolu stood apart from the usual politicians. To him, politics wasn’t a pursuit of personal gain but a true vocation, a channel through which to serve society. His first encounter with government was during the military era when he served as Attorney-General and Commissioner for Justice in Ondo State—a role that was short-lived but foundational to his political career.
Though his 2011 foray into gubernatorial politics ended in defeat, Akeredolu didn’t falter. He bided his time, learning from his setbacks, and in 2016, returned stronger, ultimately winning the governorship election. His first term was marked by his commitment to delivering on his promises, and in his second term, Akeredolu cemented his place as a prominent voice in Southwest politics.
Akeredolu’s most notable achievement was in the realm of security. He was the driving force behind the creation of Amotekun, the regional security outfit that has become a cornerstone of Southwest safety. His bold stance in advocating for state police and decentralization of security showcased his commitment to true federalism.
Throughout his tenure, Akeredolu demonstrated leadership that transcended political rivalry. He was a man of principle, fiercely loyal to those who earned his trust and unforgiving of betrayal. He valued merit, loyalty, and fairness above all else, qualities that defined both his leadership and his personal relationships.
Akeredolu’s health challenges may have prevented him from fully executing his succession plans, but his legacy lives on in the leadership of Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa, who was chosen to continue his work in the spirit of fairness and rotation. Akeredolu’s passing marked the end of one era and the beginning of another—one where his ideals continue to guide the people of Ondo State.
As Ondo moves forward, it is imperative that Akeredolu’s legacy is preserved. His successor, Aiyedatiwa, should strive to honor his memory by uniting the political factions, fostering peace, and maintaining fairness in governance. The greatest tribute to Akeredolu is for those who remain to serve with integrity, courage, and a commitment to the people, for in the end, power is transient, and only good deeds remain.
