Tinubu Speaks On Underperforming Governors

President Bola Tinubu has urged Nigerians to use their voting power to remove governors who are not meeting their expectations in terms of performance.

The President made this call on Thursday at the Presidential Villa, in response to a request from a group of Islamic scholars.

The scholars had asked the Federal Government to oversee the distribution of palliatives provided to states to alleviate the impact of the removal of fuel subsidies.

Tinubu emphasized that he cannot issue directives to the states as they have a closer connection to the people. Instead, he can only appeal to governors to follow the directives provided to them.

He further disclosed that additional palliatives would be allocated to Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs).

Acknowledging the decentralized nature of the country, Tinubu stated, “The people reside in the states. Even if I set up a panel, I will have to go through the governors and the local governments. We will continue to engage with the governors. Nigerians must hold them accountable.”

He stressed that in a constitutional democracy, it is not within the President’s purview to issue orders to states. Instead, the responsibility lies with the citizens to vote out underperforming governors.

Tinubu reiterated the importance of democratic accountability, emphasizing that citizens have the power to bring about change through the electoral process.

The Federal Government had allocated N5 billion worth of palliatives for each state to mitigate the impact of the fuel subsidy removal. However, concerns have arisen about potential misuse of these resources by certain governors.
