Tinubu To Address Nigerians Today (SEE TIME)

Tinubu 1

Bola Tinubu, the President, is scheduled to address Nigerians today (Monday) at 7 pm, as announced by his spokesperson, Dele Alake. The address will be broadcasted on television, radio stations, and other electronic media outlets through the Nigerian Television Authority and Radio Nigeria.

As of press time, the specific agenda for the broadcast is not yet known, but it is likely related to the economic challenges faced by Nigerians due to the removal of subsidy on Premium Motor Spirit (PMS), commonly known as petrol.

Following President Tinubu’s inaugural speech on May 29, 2023, where he announced the removal of petrol subsidy, the pump price of petrol rose significantly from N184 to N500 per liter. Subsequently, the price surged further to over N617 on July 18, 2023, leading to public outrage and criticism from citizens already grappling with economic difficulties.

The removal of fuel subsidy contributed to rising inflation, soaring food prices, and increased transportation costs. Additionally, the floating of the naira by the Tinubu administration further exacerbated economic challenges.

In an attempt to provide relief, the Tinubu administration announced a plan to pay a subsidy palliative of N8,000 for six months to 12 million households. However, this move was met with resistance, leading the Federal Government to order a review of the plan.

In response to these economic policies, the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) issued a seven-day ultimatum to the Tinubu administration, demanding a reversal of all “anti-poor” policies, including the petrol price hike. The NLC threatened to stage a nationwide protest starting from Wednesday, August 2, 2023, if their demands are not met.
