Tinubu Unstoppable In 2027—Unless Jonathan Runs, Dele Momodu Warns
Dele Momodu: Only Jonathan or Atiku Can Challenge Tinubu in 2027
Veteran journalist and prominent PDP chieftain, Dele Momodu, has cast doubt on the capacity of any southern politician—apart from former President Goodluck Jonathan—to challenge President Bola Tinubu in the 2027 elections. However, he questioned whether Jonathan would be willing to contest again, describing him as “a man of contentment.”
Speaking on Arise News on Monday, Momodu said the only credible opposition figure capable of mounting a serious challenge to Tinubu is Atiku Abubakar, citing his vast political experience and expansive national network.
“My theory is simple—no southern candidate can take on Tinubu, except for someone like Jonathan. But I doubt he’d want to go through that stress,” Momodu remarked.
“The only man they genuinely fear—and that’s why they’re already trying to discredit him—is Atiku Abubakar.”
Momodu emphasized that defeating Tinubu requires more than popularity—it demands deep-rooted connections and a broad support base.
“Politics is a game of numbers and networks. And no one in Nigeria today is as connected and experienced as Atiku.”
He also noted that by 2026, Tinubu would have spent three years in office, and doubted any major transformation that could change public perception.
On PDP Governors and Coalition Talks
Momodu expressed concern over the PDP Governors’ Forum’s recent stance rejecting coalition talks. He warned that such reluctance might signal covert support for Tinubu’s re-election bid.
The PDP governors, led by Bauchi State Governor Bala Mohammed, had earlier ruled out any coalition or merger during a meeting in Ibadan, choosing instead to maintain the PDP as a standalone opposition force.
“If our governors say they won’t form a coalition, then it suggests they may be secretly working for a Tinubu presidency,” Momodu warned.
He stressed that for any opposition candidate—whether Atiku, Peter Obi, or Rabiu Kwankwaso—to stand a chance in 2027, unity is essential.
“None of them can do it alone. The opposition must come together and build a strategic alliance if they truly want to unseat the APC.”
