Tinubu’s New Policy Aims To Bring Home 12,400 Nigerian Doctors From Overseas
In a move aimed at curbing the ongoing exodus of Nigerian doctors, President Bola Tinubu has approved the National Policy on Health Workforce Migration. This policy seeks to encourage the return of approximately 12,400 Nigerian-trained doctors currently practicing abroad, particularly in the UK, where 67% of them are employed.
The policy, detailed by Coordinating Minister of Health and Social Welfare, Prof Muhammad Pate, addresses both the migration of healthcare professionals and the broader challenges within Nigeria’s health sector. Key elements include improving local training facilities, integrating digital health technologies, and offering incentives to attract and retain healthcare workers within Nigeria.
Despite the promising aspects of the policy, there are calls from healthcare workers for more detailed information on its implementation. Concerns focus on the practical execution and effectiveness of the policy, as well as its impact on the rights and conditions of healthcare workers.
