Tragedy Strikes in Benin: UNIBEN Students Trapped in Building Collapse After Heavy Rainfall
Several students of the University of Benin (UNIBEN) found themselves trapped after a building collapsed following a heavy downpour in Benin City. The tragic event occurred during an intense rainfall, which caused widespread flooding and structural damage across various parts of the city.
Eyewitnesses reported that the building, housing some UNIBEN students, began to show signs of distress during the storm before it suddenly gave way. Residents and passersby rushed to the scene to assist, but many students were still trapped under the rubble.
Emergency services, including firefighters and the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), were immediately alerted. Rescue efforts are ongoing as responders work tirelessly to save those trapped in the debris. The number of casualties and injuries is yet to be confirmed.
The heavy rains, which have been relentless in recent weeks, have wreaked havoc in the region, leaving many homes and public infrastructure at risk. Authorities are urging residents to remain vigilant, especially those living in buildings with weak structural foundations.
The university community is in shock as students and staff pray for the safe rescue of their colleagues. This tragic event has once again raised concerns about the safety of buildings in flood-prone areas and the need for stricter building regulations.
As the rescue mission continues, the thoughts and prayers of the community remain with the affected students and their families.
