According to reports, renowned author Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie and her husband, Dr. Ivara Esege, have tragically lost one of their twin sons, Nkanu Nnamdi. The 21-month-old passed away on Wednesday, January 7, 2026, following a brief illness.

The loss comes nearly a year after Adichie revealed she had kept the birth of her twins private to protect them. In an interview with The Guardian UK in February 2025, she discussed welcoming her sons through surrogacy, emphasizing her decision to speak openly to help other women feel less stigmatized about non-traditional paths to motherhood.

Speaking at the inaugural ‘#WithChude Live’ concert hosted by storyteller and media entrepreneur Chude Jideonwo, Adichie addressed the challenges of balancing motherhood and career. She noted that sharing her surrogacy journey was intended to reduce societal shame surrounding fertility issues and to encourage women to feel empowered in discussing their own experiences.

“I want more women to feel less ashamed of talking about reaching motherhood through non-traditional means,” Adichie said. “There’s so much shame around fertility struggles, and it’s too heavy a burden for women to bear alone. I shared my story to show that it’s okay to approach motherhood differently.”
