Professor Maikudi, whose tenure begins on January 1, 2025, comes with an impressive academic pedigree and a record of leadership. Her appointment, set for a five-year term, was the result of a rigorous selection process in which she emerged as the top candidate from ten shortlisted applicants.
A Trailblazer in Academia
Before being appointed Vice-Chancellor, Maikudi had already demonstrated remarkable leadership. Since July 2024, she served as the acting Vice-Chancellor, where she guided the university through a turbulent period, helping to stabilize the institution while showing unwavering commitment.
Born in Katsina State on January 31, 1983, Professor Maikudi’s academic journey began with her early education at Sacred Heart School, Kaduna. She went on to attend Queens College, Yaba, Lagos, and earned her LLB from the University of Reading in 2004. Further sharpening her expertise in Public International Law, she obtained an LLM from the prestigious London School of Economics in 2005 and completed her PhD at the University of Abuja in 2015.
Joining the university as a Lecturer II in 2008, she steadily climbed the academic ranks, achieving professorial status in 2021. As a pioneering female leader, she was the first woman to head the Department of Law in 2013, and in 2019, she became the first female Deputy Dean of the Faculty of Law.
A Vision for the Future
Professor Maikudi’s tenure as Vice-Chancellor promises a new phase of innovation and progress. She has already earned a reputation as an academic leader, having introduced the ‘United Nations Law’ course at the University of Abuja and published extensively on international law. She has also played an integral role in supervising graduate research and fostering the development of legal scholarship.
A global figure in academia, Maikudi has represented both her university and Nigeria at numerous international conferences across the UK, US, South Africa, and beyond. Her deep commitment to the advancement of legal education and her strong professional networks make her an ideal candidate to lead the university into a future of greater academic excellence and transformation.
A Bright Future Ahead
As the new Vice-Chancellor of the University of Abuja, Professor Aisha Sani Maikudi is poised to usher in a period of growth, stability, and innovation. Her leadership and vision for the university will no doubt shape its direction in the coming years, promising a brighter future for students, faculty, and the broader academic community.
