Unverified And Flawed: Body Of Benchers Condemns NBS’s Corruption Report On Judiciary

The Body of Benchers (BoB) has dismissed the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS) report that ranks Nigeria’s judiciary among the most corrupt institutions in the country. During a public event in Abuja on Monday, attended by the Chief Justice of Nigeria (CJN), Justice Kudirat Kekere-Ekun, Awomolo questioned the credibility of the corruption statistics used by the NBS. He emphasized that the judiciary is home to some of Nigeria’s finest legal minds and should be recognized for its integrity and commitment to justice.

“We must not be distracted by misleading data,” Awomolo stated, highlighting that Nigerian judges and justices are invaluable assets to the nation. He called for greater respect and support for the judiciary, stressing the importance of maintaining its image as a pillar of democracy.

Awomolo also urged members of the judiciary to remain courageous and focused, reinforcing the need for the judiciary to deliver impartial judgments that safeguard the rights and liberties of all citizens. He emphasized that, through introspection, the judiciary can recommit to its foundational values as an independent arm of government, ensuring the delivery of justice for all.

In his address, Chief Justice Kekere-Ekun reiterated her commitment to advancing constitutional democracy in Nigeria, assuring that the judiciary will continue to uphold its responsibilities in maintaining constitutional stability, peace, and progress.

The conference, which focused on “Judicial Introspection,” is seen as an important moment for the judiciary to reflect on its role and challenges, and Awomolo believes it will help identify areas for improvement and foster institutional growth.

The Body of Benchers expressed its belief that these introspections will enable the judiciary to better serve the Nigerian people while addressing internal challenges and enhancing the effectiveness of the court system.
