US Reacts To BRICS Bloc Expansion

On Thursday, the United States downplayed the significance of the admission of six new members into the BRICS bloc of developing nations, expressing its commitment to collaborating with partners across the globe.

During a summit in South Africa, the BRICS, which includes key US adversaries China and Russia, announced its decision to expand its membership by including new countries such as Iran—an arch-rival of the United States since the 1979 Islamic revolution.

A spokesperson from the State Department stated, “The United States reiterates its belief that countries may choose the partners and groupings with whom they will associate. We will continue to work with our partners and allies in bilateral, regional, and multilateral settings to enhance our shared prosperity and uphold global peace and security.”

One noteworthy player in this context is India, another BRICS member that has also been strategically pursued by the United States.

India is set to host a summit next month in New Delhi for the Group of 20, a platform that brings together major developed and emerging economies.

Jake Sullivan, the national security advisor to US President Joe Biden, engaged in discussions at the White House on Thursday with counterparts from Britain, France, Germany, and Italy. These discussions encompassed the upcoming G20 summit and support for Ukraine.

The Western powers aim for “robust outcomes” at the New Delhi summit, intending to underscore the G20’s role as the principal forum for economic cooperation. Their objective is to drive forward an affirmative and ambitious agenda that serves the interests of developing and emerging nations, as outlined in a statement from the White House.

During their annual summit, the BRICS (Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa) concurred on the inclusion of Argentina, Ethiopia, Iran, Saudi Arabia, Egypt, and the United Arab Emirates as full members, effective January 1.
