announcement during the opening of a one-day workshop in Potiskum on Monday.

The event, hosted by RUWASA in partnership with UNICEF, was themed “Creating a Comprehensive Roadmap for Achieving ODF Status in Yobe.” Baba explained that the outcomes from the workshop would provide a strategic framework for the other 14 local government areas in Yobe to achieve open defecation-free status.

He emphasized that the workshop aligns with Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 6.0, which aims to eliminate open defecation globally by 2030.

“The goal is to inspire all stakeholders to actively take responsibility and contribute to the objectives we will finalize at the end of this workshop,” Baba said. He also revealed that Yobe is aiming to eliminate open defecation by 2025-2030, in line with Nigeria’s and global agreements.

Baba also highlighted the detrimental effects of open defecation, noting that it contributes significantly to waterborne diseases like cholera, diarrhea, and hepatitis.

Abubakar Moi, a facilitator and UNICEF desk officer at RUWASA, urged attendees to enhance community engagement and efforts to combat open defecation, stressing that more collaboration is key to achieving this goal statewide.
