The former LP members who crossed over to the APC include Rep. Tochukwu Chinedu Okere (Imo), Rep. Donatus Matthew (Kaduna), Rep. Akiba Bassey (Cross River), and Rep. Esosa Iyawe (Edo). Additionally, Rep. Erhiatake Ibori-Suenu, the daughter of ex-Delta State Governor James Ibori, also left the PDP for the APC.

On Tuesday, Speaker Abbas Tajuddeen announced Chollom’s defection on the floor of the House, with the lawmaker citing internal crises within the LP as the catalyst for his decision. Chollom expressed his belief that his constituents’ political future would be more secure under the leadership of the APC, affirming that he could better serve them within the ruling party.

However, the defection was met with opposition from the House Minority Leader, Rep. Kingsley Chinda (PDP, Rivers), who raised a point of order, referencing Section 68 (1) (d) of the Nigerian Constitution. Chinda contested the defection, arguing that it was unconstitutional and demanding the rejection of Chollom’s defection letter.

Despite Chinda’s objections, Speaker Tajuddeen ruled that the defection was valid, stating he was satisfied with the documentation provided by Chollom. In contrast, Rep. George Ozodinobi (Anambra, LP) expressed disappointment, asserting that the LP was not in crisis, contrary to Chollom’s claims.

The defection of Chollom was witnessed by former Plateau State Governor and current Senator representing Plateau South, Simon Lalong, who was present in the House chambers during the announcement.
