We’re Tired of Speeches – Shehu Sani Calls Out FG, Says Nigerians Need Security Now”

Former Kaduna Central Senator, Shehu Sani, has emphasized that defeating terrorism is just as critical as maintaining national unity, peace, and the survival of the Nigerian state.

Speaking on Channels Television’s Politics Today, Sani urged the Federal Government to adopt a more proactive and effective strategy in tackling terrorism, rather than relying on yet another security summit. He expressed concern that Nigeria has been embroiled in a prolonged war against terrorism and banditry for over a decade, yet progress remains limited due to outdated or ineffective approaches.

His comments come as insecurity continues to plague the nation, particularly in the northern regions, where numerous lives have been lost, properties destroyed, and communities displaced. In response, the Senate recently agreed to set up an ad hoc committee to organize a two-day national security summit in Abuja, bringing together stakeholders across all levels of government and society to address the crisis.

However, Sani criticized the summit approach, stating:
“We’ve talked too much about insecurity. What we need now is decisive action. The government’s response has failed to eliminate bandits and terrorists. Despite countless discussions, summits, and conferences, these groups continue to terrorize communities, destroy homes, and kidnap for ransom.”

He added that terrorists often re-emerge more aggressively even after military efforts to neutralize them, highlighting the lack of sustainable impact.

Sani concluded by noting that Nigeria’s battle with terrorism is part of a broader regional struggle, shared by neighboring countries like Niger, Mali, and Burkina Faso, which are also grappling with similar insurgent threats.
