Why The Gale Of Defections Would Spell Doom For PDP In Edo Elections

The most noticeable feature of Edo’s governorship race today is the flood of PDP defections from all over the state. Top party officials from the left, right, and centre are defecting to the APC. While some may say that these individuals have little political value or are only looking for power, the fact is considerably more telling.

If there is no hope in the APC, why leave the state’s ruling party to the opposition? If the ruling party has done well in the state, why are its members humiliated and fleeing in droves?

Major PDP members have fled Oredo, resulting in a large vacuum in grassroots mobilisation.In Ikpoba-Okha, Egor, Ovia South West/Ovia North East, Akoko-Edo, and across the three Etsako’s, PDP stalwarts have joined the APC, condemning the PDP’s failure to create jobs and promote economic development.

The APC’s practical solutions, such as supporting local businesses and improving market conditions, have gained traction. In Esan West, prominent PDP figures have switched allegiance, citing the lack of progress in Obaseki’s administration and the deceptive nature of his leadership. They argue that Esan is regressing rather than progressing, and their party leaders can no longer tolerate the situation.

Senator Monday Okpebholo has wowed people with his humility, intelligence, and commitment to progress. His grassroots approach has engaged community leaders, addressed grievances, and presented a compelling vision for Edo State.

Governor Obaseki’s administration has been characterized by draconian policies and a lack of regard for the people’s needs. His tenure has been marred by poor performance and unfulfilled promises, particularly in critical areas such as infrastructure, healthcare, and education. This has led to widespread disenchantment among the electorate. Obaseki’s heavy-handed approach and self-serving policies have alienated many, and Asue Ighodalo is seen as a continuation of these regressive practices.

The mass defections from the PDP to the APC are not just a loss of personnel but a loss of trust and faith in the PDP’s ability to govern effectively. The defectors are influential leaders with deep connections to the grassroots, signalling a broader shift in political allegiance among the electorate, who are increasingly looking to the APC for change.

As the state prepares for the approaching election, the realignment of these powerful personalities has the potential to substantially alter the political landscape. It is unclear whether the APC’s strategies will result in actual gains, but the need for change is clear. Voters in Edo North, Central, and South will determine if these pledges result in tangible change for the communities they represent.
