The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, has issued a firm response to critics who claim that his administration has been focusing development efforts only on elite government districts while ignoring grassroots stakeholders.

According to IReporter Online, Wike made these remarks during a media parley in Abuja on Monday, where he defended the FCT’s development trajectory as one grounded in stakeholder engagement and sound urban planning.

“Why should I be bothered because the government is showcasing infrastructure?” Wike asked rhetorically. “Can you execute development without proper urban planning?”

Wike explained that since taking office, his administration has visited all six area councils of the FCT, holding consultations with traditional rulers, youths, and women.

According to IReporter Online, he emphasized that these grassroots engagements informed key projects, including the establishment of both the Youth and Women’s Secretariats — a first in the history of the FCT.

He dismissed allegations of exclusion, stating, “Who are the stakeholders they say we didn’t consult? We sat with them. This engagement is what shaped our project direction.”

According to IReporter Online, the minister also criticized those who dismiss progress purely for political reasons. “Some people just criticise for the sake of it. Like we say in my place, if you can’t find anything against someone, you’ll just say ‘look at how he looks.’”

Highlighting the scale of inherited challenges, Wike urged Nigerians to temper expectations. “You can’t expect what hasn’t been done in 10 years to be fixed in just two,” he said, adding, “Whether or not you like the person in charge, you must acknowledge when government is doing well.”
