Zulum Raises Alarm: Insecurity Still Threatens Borno Despite Military Gains”

Borno State Governor Babagana Zulum has reiterated his unwavering commitment to securing the state from the mounting threat of insurgency, vowing that no local government area will be allowed to fall into the hands of terrorists.

This strong declaration followed his meeting with President Bola Tinubu at the Presidential Villa in Abuja on Monday.

Speaking to journalists after the meeting, Governor Zulum said he had briefed the president on the deteriorating security situation in Borno and other parts of northern Nigeria, particularly the northeast region.

“Things are not going well in northern Nigeria, especially in the northeast,” Zulum stated, expressing concern over the recent escalation in insurgent attacks.

He disclosed that both military installations and civilian populations had come under increased attacks in Borno. Despite this, the governor said he remained hopeful, citing the federal government’s prompt response to requests for intervention.

“We have appealed to the federal government, and I believe the Nigerian Armed Forces have taken decisive steps in recent days to address the resurgence of insurgency,” he noted.

Zulum highlighted a key measure being considered to counter insurgents: the formation of a “forest guard” unit, which he described as a potential “game-changer” in the fight against terrorism. This initiative aims to enhance ground intelligence and strengthen local defence mechanisms.

The governor also raised alarm over the advanced weaponry now being used by terrorist groups such as Boko Haram and ISWAP, warning that the militants are better armed than in the past.

“Terrorist factions like Boko Haram and ISWAP are now using sophisticated arms and ammunition,” he said.

Zulum reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to supporting the military through the mobilisation of community volunteers who will work hand-in-hand with security forces to defend vulnerable areas.

“As governor of Borno State, I will not relent in fortifying the resilience of our people,” he assured.

He firmly stated that no part of the state would be lost to insurgents: “It will never happen. I believe, Insha’Allah, with the support of the Nigerian Army and the Armed Forces, not a single local government will fall to these terrorists.”

Governor Zulum concluded with optimism, expressing confidence that sustained cooperation between federal and state authorities would ultimately restore lasting peace and security to Borno and the wider region.
