Date For Ekweremadu, Wife, Doctor Sentencing Emerge
Sonia, the 25-year-old daughter of former Deputy Senate President Ike Ekweremadu, sobbed after her parents were convicted by a British court yesterday.
The senator, his 56-year-old wife Beatrice, and Dr. Obinna Obeta, 51, were all found guilty of conspiring to exploit David Nwamini.
They will be sentenced on May 5th and face up to ten years in prison.
According to a statement from the Crown Prosecution Service (CPS), the trio were found guilty by the United Kingdom (UK) Magistrate’s Court of trafficking Nwamini from Nigeria to Britain in order to provide a kidney for Ekweremadu’s 25-year-old daughter, Sonia.
Sonia was found not guilty of the same charge that her parents and the Nigerian doctor were.
Sonia, who had refused to testify, burst into tears as she was cleared by the jury.
She sobbed as she hugged her father, who had been remanded into custody alongside the others ahead of the May 5 sentencing.
The prosecution confirmed that the maximum sentence in the case of organ harvesting is life in prison.
Following the convictions, Chief Crown Prosecutor Joanne Jakymec called the conspiracy a “horrible plot.”

She said: “This was a horrific plot to exploit a vulnerable victim by trafficking him to the UK for the purpose of transplanting his kidney.
“The convicted defendants showed utter disregard for the victim’s welfare, health and well-being and used their considerable influence to a high degree of control throughout, with the victim having a limited understanding of what was really going on here.”
After nearly 14 hours of deliberation, the jury found Ekweremadu, Beatrice, and Obeta guilty.
Esther Richardson, a detective inspector with the Metropolitan Police, praised the victim for his bravery in speaking out against the offenders.
According to her, the police, Crown Prosecution Service, and Human Tissue Authority teams “worked tirelessly” on the case, which is the first time defendants have been convicted of an organ-trafficking conspiracy under the Modern Slavery Act.
The charges against Ekweremadus and Dr. Obeta were denied.
Ekweremadu had been detained since June 23 of last year. His wife, who was arrested alongside him, was granted bail by a London criminal court shortly after their arrest.
Nwamini, a Lagos street trader, was flown to the UK last year to provide Sonia with a kidney in an £80,000 private transplant at the Royal Free Hospital in Camden, North London.
He claimed he was told to pose as Sonia’s cousin in order to get the transplant approved.
However, a consultant at the NHS hospital refused to remove the vital organ after becoming suspicious because the volunteer kidney donor appeared to be unaware of his mission at first.
According to police investigators, Nwamini had no idea his kidney was going to be removed until he was taken to the Royal Free to meet the surgeon.
He ran away, sleeping on the street for about three days, before walking into the Staines Police Station on May 5, 2022.
