Rasmus Højlund Seals Permanent Move To Napoli From Manchester United

Manchester United have officially confirmed the permanent departure of Danish striker Rasmus Højlund to Napoli after the Italian club activated a contractual clause linked to their qualification for next season’s UEFA Champions League.

According to reports, the transfer package is valued at £43.2 million, including the fee paid during Højlund’s loan spell last season, bringing an end to the forward’s three-year association with the Premier League giants. The 23-year-old initially joined Manchester United from Atalanta in 2023 in a deal worth £72 million.

Højlund spent the 2025/26 campaign on loan at Napoli, where he enjoyed a productive season under manager Antonio Conte. The Denmark international scored 16 goals in 44 appearances across all competitions, playing a key role as Napoli secured the Supercoppa Italiana and finished second in Serie A.

Reports indicate that the permanent transfer is valued at approximately £38 million and could provide Napoli with additional funds as they pursue a move for Atalanta midfielder Éderson.

During his time at Old Trafford, Højlund registered 26 goals in 95 appearances in all competitions. Although he showed glimpses of his potential, he struggled to consistently meet expectations following his high-profile arrival and eventually slipped down the pecking order after Manchester United signed Benjamin Šeško from RB Leipzig last summer.

Having rediscovered his best form in Italy, Højlund was said to be eager to continue his career in Naples rather than return to Manchester.

In a statement confirming the move, Manchester United praised the striker’s contributions during his time at the club and wished him success in the next chapter of his career. The club highlighted his role in their FA Cup triumph in 2024 and acknowledged his achievements during his loan spell with Napoli.

Højlund’s departure is expected to be one of several changes at Old Trafford this summer as manager Michael Carrick continues efforts to reshape the squad ahead of the new season.

Veteran midfielder Casemiro, defender Tyrell Malacia and winger Jadon Sancho are reportedly set to leave the club upon the expiration of their contracts. Manchester United are also understood to be open to offers for Manuel Ugarte, while growing interest has emerged from Serie A clubs in Joshua Zirkzee and from Turkish sides in goalkeeper Altay Bayindir.

The club is also reportedly working toward securing permanent exits for Marcus Rashford and André Onana following their respective loan spells at Barcelona and Trabzonspor.

Meanwhile, Manchester United continue to strengthen their squad, with Brazilian midfielder Éderson believed to be closing in on a move to Old Trafford in a deal worth an initial £35 million plus performance-related add-ons.
