BREAKING: ECOWAS Directs Deployment Of Standby Force To Restore Constitutional Order In Niger Republic

The Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) has instructed its standby force to intervene and reinstate constitutional governance in Niger Republic.

The declaration was announced by ECOWAS President, Omar Alieu Touray, as he presented the resolution on the Niger coup during an ECOWAS Extraordinary meeting held in Abuja on Thursday.

Additionally, ECOWAS urged the African Union (AU), partner nations, and institutions to endorse the sub-regional body’s resolution.

ECOWAS stated that all attempts to engage in dialogue with the military junta in Niger Republic were met with resistance by the coup leaders. The sub-regional body condemned the ongoing detention of President Mohamed Bazoum and his family members.

The resolution stated, in part, “Instruct the committee of the Chief of Defence Staff to immediately activate the ECOWAS standby force along with all its components.

“Order the deployment of the ECOWAS standby force to reinstate constitutional order in the Republic of Niger.

“Reiterate its continued dedication to restoring constitutional order through peaceful means.”
