In an official statement read on national television, a spokesperson for Niger’s military outlined the charges against Bazoum, which include “high treason and undermining the internal and external security” of the country.

Bazoum, along with his family, has been held at the president’s official residence in Niamey since the coup on July 26. Concerns have been raised about their conditions in detention, leading to international attention.

The Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) has called for Bazoum’s reinstatement, imposing significant economic sanctions on Niger and even threatening the possibility of military intervention if civilian rule is not restored.

However, ECOWAS remains committed to seeking a diplomatic solution to the crisis. The spokesperson for Niger’s military, Colonel Major Amadou Abdramane, dismissed concerns about Bazoum’s health, stating that the deposed leader had seen a doctor the previous day.

Abdramane criticized the ECOWAS sanctions on Niger, describing them as “illegal, inhumane, and humiliating.” He stated that these measures were making it challenging for people to access essential necessities like medicines, food, and electricity.

This announcement from the military came shortly after a group of Nigerian Islamic scholars revealed a meeting with Niger’s coup leader, Abdourahamane Tchiani, in Niamey. They announced that Tchiani had agreed to hold “direct talks” with ECOWAS.

The Muslim scholars’ visit was supported by Nigerian President Bola Tinubu, who also heads ECOWAS. Tinubu has taken a firm stance against the coup, which marks the sixth in an ECOWAS member state since 2020.

ECOWAS has imposed severe measures, including severing financial transactions and electricity supplies, as well as closing borders with landlocked Niger, significantly impacting the country’s access to essential imports.

The charges against Bazoum are likely to escalate tensions between Niger’s military and the international community. The possibility of a military intervention to reinstate Bazoum has sparked division among ECOWAS members and has drawn warnings from foreign powers, including Russia and Algeria.

Niger’s neighboring countries, Mali and Burkina Faso, also governed by military regimes resulting from coups, have indicated that such an intervention would be perceived as a declaration of war on them.

The coup in Niger has major implications for Western nations, as Niamey was considered a partner in the Sahel region to combat the growing uprising by groups affiliated with al-Qaeda and ISIS. Countries like the United States and France have a significant military presence in the region, and they have invested substantial resources in military assistance and training for Niger’s forces.
