Liars” – Sowore Slams MTN Boss Over ‘Unlimited Data’ Claim

According to Ireporter Online, Nigerian activist and former presidential candidate of the African Action Congress (AAC), Omoyele Sowore, has strongly criticized the Chief Executive Officer of MTN Nigeria, Karl Toriola, over his remarks on the feasibility of unlimited mobile data plans.

Toriola had stated during a press briefing in Lagos titled “Data on Trial” that unlimited data packages are not practically sustainable on mobile networks anywhere in the world unless offered at very high costs. He explained that no telecom operator can maintain quality service if users are given unrestricted data access at low prices, arguing that such models are economically unviable.

However, Sowore rejected the claim in a post shared on , describing the statement as misleading. He insisted that millions of consumers globally already have access to unlimited or near-unlimited broadband and mobile data plans at prices he argued are more affordable relative to income levels compared to what Nigerians currently pay for what he described as substandard service.

Sowore, who has frequently criticized telecom operators in Nigeria over pricing and service quality, also suggested the possibility of a nationwide protest targeting MTN. He accused the company and other operators of repeatedly increasing tariffs while failing to deliver reliable network services, insisting that Nigerian consumers deserve fairer and more transparent pricing structures.

The controversy comes amid ongoing debates between telecom operators and regulators over recent tariff adjustments approved by the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC). Earlier in 2025, the NCC authorized increases of up to 50 percent on voice, SMS, and data services, citing inflation, currency depreciation, and the need to sustain investment in the sector.
