Nigerian State Initiates Talks With Bandits Amid Escalating Killings; Military Action Possible

MAIDUGURI, Nigeria

Amid rising violence, a northern Nigerian state has commenced a dialogue process with bandits, just days after their attack resulted in the downing of a military helicopter during a rescue mission.

Governor Umar Bago of Niger state announced on Wednesday that, despite the escalating attacks and killings in the region, the government is initially opting for talks rather than immediate military action against the bandits.

Speaking to reporters in the nation’s capital, Abuja, Bago emphasized the government’s intention to engage in discussions with the bandits, expressing a desire to avoid significant military intervention.

The governor had recently conferred with President Bola Tinubu to address the surging bandit assaults within his state.

Niger state, one of Nigeria’s largest, attracts individuals such as farmers, herders, and pastoralists from various West African countries.

Bago detailed his strategy to mitigate conflicts between farmers and herders by establishing the Ministry of Pastoral and Nomadic Affairs, aimed at fostering dialogue with the bandits in the region.

Despite government assurances to combat the challenge, incidents of banditry and terrorist attacks continue to rise in Nigeria.

On Monday, bandits reportedly shot down a military helicopter in Niger state. The helicopter had been dispatched to airlift troops injured in a prior ambush within the state.

Earlier, bandits ambushed and killed 13 soldiers along the Zungeru-Tegina road in Madaka Ward of Rafi Local Government Area.

President Tinubu denounced the incidents, offering condolences to affected families, military leaders, and Nigerian Armed Forces personnel. He pledged to address the ongoing security crisis and mounting inflation.

In a statement released on Wednesday, Tinubu unveiled new ministers and their portfolios, a move occurring three months after he took office.

The reconstituted 45-member Cabinet comprises members of his political party, the All Progressives Congress (APC), former governors, technocrats, and professionals.

A financial expert with prior experience at the World Bank now leads the country’s finance and economic team.

Nigerians are anticipating that these new ministers will collaborate with the president to urgently tackle the nation’s high cost of living, food scarcity, and healthcare sector challenges.
