Fresh Details Of Merger Discussion Between Atiku, Kwankwaso, Obi Emerge

In anticipation of potential developments during the country’s ongoing transition process, a trio consisting of Atiku Abubakar, Rabiu Kwankwaso, and Peter Obi have initiated discussions about the prospect of merging their political forces.

The primary objective of this potential merger is to establish a robust political party capable of effectively challenging the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), according to sources familiar with the matter.

This collaboration among the three political leaders began with a series of meetings.

It reportedly commenced with talks between Atiku, the presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), and Kwankwaso, who represented the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) in the last presidential election.

After this initial phase of discussions was deemed successful, efforts to involve Peter Obi, the presidential candidate of the Labour Party (LP) and the driving force behind the “OBIdient Movement,” were set in motion. Obi is expected to be brought into the discussions following the agreement of the other two stakeholders.

The ongoing discussions are currently in their preliminary stages and are centered around two main considerations. The first aspect involves the leaders waiting to observe the outcomes of election petitions that are currently before the courts. This step will help determine the subsequent course of action, particularly if the court rulings do not align with their expectations.

Sources familiar with the discussions revealed that the leaders are hopeful that the presidential election tribunal will deliver a “just and fair” verdict. They anticipate that the tribunal will conclude that the election that brought President Bola Tinubu to power did not withstand electoral scrutiny and therefore necessitate corrective action. In such a scenario, the leaders anticipate the possibility of a re-election or rerun. This could lead to their alignment in a merger to contest the election and challenge Tinubu and the APC.

However, if the tribunal’s decision takes a different direction, the leaders are reportedly contemplating the formation of a formidable political party in preparation for the 2027 general elections. During this election cycle, they envision taking control of the reins of power from the ruling APC.

An informed source shared insights, stating, “The discussions were initiated by Kwankwaso and Atiku, and they have agreed to involve Peter Obi to establish a strong opposition after the conclusion of the court cases. The matter of leadership for the opposition has not yet been broached; they are deferring that decision until after the court proceedings. Following the conclusion of the court cases, they plan to strategize for either a re-election or to jointly contest the 2027 elections. They are exploring the formation of a formidable political party that would encompass the PDP, Labour, and NNPP.”
