Madrid residents received instructions from city authorities on Sunday to remain indoors as Storm Dana threatened to lash the Spanish capital.

The state meteorological agency, AEMET, issued warnings for Madrid, Toledo, and Cadiz, anticipating heavy rains from Dana.

AEMET forecasted that Madrid could receive up to 120 liters per square meter of rain within a 12-hour period. Valencia, situated on the Mediterranean coast, had already experienced intense rainfall.

Madrid’s mayor, José Luis Martínez-Almeida, urged residents to stay indoors, describing the upcoming weather conditions as an “exceptional situation.” He posted a message on social media, asking people to remain at home due to the anticipated record-breaking rainfall.

In response to flood risks, Madrid’s emergency services sent text messages to residents advising against using vehicles. Additionally, Atletico Madrid announced that their LaLiga football match against Sevilla scheduled for Sunday would be postponed due to the storm.
