Details Emerge As Event Centre Collapses On Burial Ceremony Guests

During a burial ceremony reception at an event center in Ijero Ekiti, Ekiti State, the roof of the venue collapsed on Saturday, resulting in several injuries. The incident caused panic and a stampede as guests fled to safety.

Six individuals who sustained severe injuries were promptly transported to the hospital for medical treatment. The scene of the collapse was strewn with spilled food, broken bottles, shoes, male caps, female wigs, and headgears.

Ekiti State Governor, Mr. Biodun Oyebanji, expressed sympathy for the victims and visited the site of the building collapse and Ijero General Hospital, where some of the injured were receiving treatment. While acknowledging the seriousness of the incident, he was relieved that no lives were lost.

The governor emphasized the need for proactive measures to prevent such incidents, highlighting the importance of thorough supervision and certification during the construction of public buildings. He called for stringent monitoring to ensure buildings meet specifications and utilize standard materials, as substandard products are a common factor contributing to building collapses.

The Permanent Secretary of the Ekiti State Emergency Management Agency, Mr. Olajide Borode, mentioned that the Ekiti State Bureau of Special Project would conduct an integrity test on the building to determine if it can be salvaged or requires demolition. Fire services were deployed for rescue operations immediately after receiving a distress call.
